You Cannot Escape How Important You Are #61

Creativity has made the world we live in. Let that sit with you for a moment. Everything around you in the room your in was once an untested idea in someone’s head. Before that, it was a revolutionary idea that seemed crazy.

As creative people, we’re an integral part of this process. We choose the industry that we create in and we work to solve problems and help others.

Think back to all the time-traveling movies that you’ve seen in your life. When characters in a movie go back in time, they are always given a warning not to mess with anything. Something as benign as stepping on an insect might cause a rippling effect through time. When you arrive back, everything has changed.

Now think about the present moment. The present is in the future’s past, as odd as that sounds to say out loud. It’s easy to imagine a thousand years from now, some new time traveling hero finds himself where we are today with very similar instructions. Don’t. Mess. With… ANYTHING. Any small action you take could have a rippling effect through time.

This is incredibly inspiring to think about. The raw power a time-traveling hero has to influence time is within our grasp. And it always has been. Why do we value one but not the other? Why can we agree that a hero going back to the past and radically change the present, but then reject the idea that we have the exact same power? You cannot believe one without believing the other. Every action you take matters, whether you acknowledge it or not. And the same is true for every action you don’t take. You cannot escape how important you are.

The question isn’t whether you want to matter, it’s HOW you want to matter. As creatives, we have the power to shape the world in ways big and small. If you choose to ignore the importance of your actions, you’re still making an important choice. When you take highly creative actions… when you do things that are unexpected, you influence those around you. When you explore the unknown, you give other people the right to do it as well. You teach them that it’s possible.
But if you choose to lay down your creativity, you’ll also influence others. You’ll teach those around you that the unknown is a scary place and that your industry already has everything it needs. Your actions or lack of actions will influence the world. You can either create momentum or inertia. You are a time-traveling badass with godly powers to shape the future. The only question is what future do you want to create.
